The Queensland Choir, in collaboration with QPAC, will stage an Australian Premiere when it performs Missa Pacifica at QPAC on June 4, 2006.
The event will see close to 400 musicians on stage in the Concert Hall of QPAC:
The 100 + voices of the State choir, Soprano Amy Wilkinson, Alto Georgia Hawes and approximately 300 school choristers from Queensland State and Independent Secondary schools. The 35 piece orchestra, that accompanies this vibrant choral work by New Zealander David Hamilton, will feature 2 harps, a string section, brass instruments and a myriad of percussion instruments.
The beautiful harmonies, exciting rhythms and mixture of languages from the Pacific Islands are the highlight of this new choral work first performed in Auckland in November last year. Hamilton uses the Latin Mass as the basis for the text of his composition. Missa Pacifica opens with a distant voice suggesting a Maori 'karanga', a calling together. The work then continues to pay a
musical tribute to and celebrate our Asia/Pacifica region.
William Barton – Australia’s leading didgeridoo artist – will welcome you to the performancewith his own Australian Premiere of Sacred Song – performed by The Queensland Choir and solo didgeridoo. This will be a truly moving event.
Missa Pacifica – a celebration of peace in the pacific will mesmerise you!
