The Queensland Choir is more than Queensland’s premier choir. It is one of only a handful of great choirs in Australia. The choir comprises more than 100 volunteer choristers, of diverse cultural backgrounds and ages (over 17), who perform in the symphonic choir, the chamber choir, the Brisbane Sings Messiah Chorus or all three. Beginning in 1872 as the Brisbane Musical Union , the choir changed its name to the Queensland State and Municipal Choir and more recently to the Queensland Choir. It has led the development of choral performances in this State for more than a century.

The Queensland Choir performs with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Pops Orchestra, Sinfonia of St Andrew's, various other choirs and a host of guest artists every year. It also presents its annual series of concerts at venues in Brisbane and surrounding areas. The choir’s repertoire ranges from rarely performed works to opera choruses and from standard choral classics to musical comedy choruses.

The choir is an auditioned choir and all choristers and new applicants audition every year for a place in the choir. Once accepted, members enjoy a busy and challenging concert program. Musical Director, and Chorus Master, Kevin Power OAM ensures that all choristers rise to meet the professional demands of choral preparation and performance for each of the choir’s events.

The Queensland Choir’s long and illustrious history underpins its excellent reputation and, in turn, provides a platform on which the State of Queensland’s choral development can continue to strengthen and grow. The choir’s Board of Directors, management, volunteer groups, and supporters work together to achieve the choir’s goal of being integral to the advancement of choral music – its performance and promotion – throughout Queensland.

Management of Choir

The Choir is managed by Board of Management which is elected annually from the singing and non singing members.
